Choir Family Loses Beloved Member

Jane Aylsworth Obituary

Janie Aylsworth was known to many as the “best teacher ever.”  She served the Holt district as teacher for 40 years.  She, her husband Chuck have avid supporters of the Holt Vocal Music Program since their daughter Elizabeth attended.  Janie served as Holt Vocal Music Boosters President and worked tirelessly on behalf of the Holt choristers and program.  The obituary tribute to her life is below.  Thanks, Janie Aylsworth, the choir family will remember, and miss you.

Beloved wife, mother, and teacher, Jane “Janie” Aylsworth, age 63, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016.  Janie was born on June 11, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, to Margaret and Marino “Gene” Scarpone and was the eldest of seven children.  Growing up, Janie had an innate talent for teaching and dreamed of one day becoming an elementary school teacher.  A voracious learner, Janie graduated summa cum laude from Hillsdale College and obtained her Master’s Degree from Michigan State University.  Janie, known best as “Mrs. A.,” spent the past 40 years as a teacher in the Holt Public School system, spending the majority of her career teaching and nurturing first graders until her retirement in June 2016.  An avid baker, Janie was renowned for her exquisite baked goods and sweet treats.  Janie also loved to spend time gardening, reading, attending musicals, operas, and symphony concerts, and exuberantly supported her daughter Elizabeth in all of her creative endeavors.  Janie married her soulmate Charles “Chuck” Aylsworth on August 13, 1976, and together they shared forty years of love, laughter, and joy.  Janie was an inspiration to many with her unlimited passion and talent for teaching, her unwavering faith in God, and her incredible spiritual strength throughout her cancer journey—a true “earthly angel,” Sempre Coraggio.

Janie was preceded in death by her father, Gene.  Surviving family members include her husband Chuck, daughter Elizabeth, her mother Margaret, her six brothers and sisters: Jim, Jeanne, John, Jerry, Joanne, and Janet, and her black lab Bella.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, at Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, located at 2121 N. Cedar Street in Holt, MI.  A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 28, at 11:00 a.m. at River Terrace Church, located at 1509 River Terrace Drive in East Lansing, MI.

The orders for the Century Resources Fundraiser are scheduled to arrive at HHS during the week of November 14-18.

It will be VERY IMPORTANT for students to deliver the products promptly, as we will have only one week prior to Thanksgiving break.

Thank you both students and patrons for your support.  This fundraiser has generated approximately $1,800 which will all go directly back to HHS Choirs!

Bravo!

11 Holt Choristers Advance to State Honors Choir!

Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded positions in the Michigan School Vocal Music Association State Honors Choirs this year!

Abby McKay, Makayla Kost, Emily Hadick, Genesis Powell, Colin McCarthy, Jake Hitchcock, Austin Frank, Adam Parry, Karena Lewis, Natalie Baker, and Megan Myers.

Although large numbers of Holt students qualify each year, we should never take these placements for granted.  This is a HUGH  and VERY competitive honor which represents our students’ dedication to excellence in performing arts.  It is a proud time to be from Holt! Congratulations to all who participate in the honors choir program, who so proudly represent themselves, our school, and our community!

Congratulations to “Sweet 16” Regional Honors Choir Participants

Once again the Holt Choristers will proudly represent themselves, their school, and community in large numbers at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association Region B Honors Choir.  This year Holt had twenty students audition, and again saw one of the largest groups of students selected by any schools in the region.  They are currently learning repertoire and will converge with approximately 100 other students on the campus of Western Michigan University to spend the day working with a guest conductor preparing for a concert showcase at approximately 4pm in Dalton Center.  The concert is open to the public and free of charge.

They will each audition during the day for placement in State and All-State Honors Choirs.  Good luck! and Congratulations!  to all of our representatives!

Mr. Bishop Directs MSVMA Region B Honors Choir

Mr. Bishop Directs MSVMA 2011 Region B Honors Choir

The Region B Honors Choir experience was unique and uniquely special for the Holt participants this year.  Mr. Bishop received a call from the Region B Honors Choir Supervisor Matt Laura during Thanksgiving break to ask if Mr. B. would be available to substitute direct for Mr. Greg Cleveland.  Mr. Cleveland had emergency surgery on a knee injury and would not be available to direct.  With a week to prepare, Mr. Bishop agreed.

The event was unique because usually directors do not have the privilege of directing their own students at honors choir.  It was a wonderful day of great music-making culminating in a most excellent final concert.  To add to the excitement of the day, a record number of HHS students moved on to participate in State Honors Choir to be held in January at Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids.  Congratulations to the 12 Holt High School MSVMA State Choral Festival representatives; and congratulations to the 16 Holt High School Regional Honors Choir participants who represented themselves, their school, and their community so proudly!
